Rick Phillips
Director, LLB
Rick ran his own legal practice in Parnell for 20 years, specialising in family and business law.
Commercial clients include export and import firms, software developers, property developers and money lenders. Rick masterminded the challenge which saw competitive duty free shopping at Auckland airport.
Rick joined Barter Law in 2011. His primary area of expertise is business law.
Steve Barter
Consultant, LLB
Steve worked as an advocate at the Employers’ Federation before joining a Commercial Property partnership in the City.
In 1990 he started the legal software business ‘Junior Partner’. It’s now the second most popular legal management software in NZ.
The same year, he founded Barter Law which has now established itself as one of the North Shores pre-eminent litigation firms.
Steve is an experienced advocate in all Court levels with particular expertise in commercial, property and employment law.
Steve is a long time member and current President of Albany Rotary.
Margaret Hickton-Burnett
Associate, BA, LLB
Margaret qualified as a lawyer in New Zealand before heading to London where she qualified as a solicitor of England and Wales and worked for five years in the areas of employment and commercial contracts.
Margaret joined Barter Law in 2003. She has extensive experience in civil litigation, relationship property, commercial contracts, and trusts and estate planning.
Laurence Herbke
Solictor, LLB
Laurence graduated with an LLB from the University of Otago in 2008. Since then he has gained extensive legal experience working as a solicitor in Dunedin, as a law lecturer at the University of Münster in Germany, and most recently with Auckland's Public Defence Service before joining Barter Law in 2015.
At Barter Law, Laurence works in our litigation team providing the Criminal Law service. That includes representing clients at the District Court on most charges, appeals to the High Court and on Limited Licence applications. Laurence also represents our business and private clients in commercial disputes, contract negotiations, employment issues and in other litigation.
Wendy Delaveau
Conveyancing Practitioner & Registered Legal Executive
Wendy joined Barter Law in 2002 and has considerable experience in residential and commercial sale & purchase transactions, property subdivisions, leasing, wills and power of attorney work.

Glenda Martin
Legal Secretary &
Receptionist
Glenda is an experienced legal secretary and runs our office. She has been the first port of call at the firm since joining us in 2008.
Julie Watts
Trust Account Administrator
Julie is the firms Trust Account Administrator and accounts person. Prior to joining us in 2015, Julie worked as a legal executive in conveyancing.
