    Barter

    Steve’s degree is from Auckland University. He worked as an advocate for the Employers Federation before taking a partnership at an Auckland city firm in the area of Commercial Property. In 1990 Steve started the legal software firm known as ‘Junior Partner’ which software is now the second most widely used legal practice management software in New Zealand.

    The same year he founded the firm Barter & Co. Since it's incorporation as Barter & Co Limited in 2008 the firm has established itself as one of North Shore’s pre-eminent litigation firms.

    Steve has a wide range of experience including civil litigation, dispute resolution, company, commercial and securities law, employment law, relationship property and trusts.

    Steve is the firm’s senior barrister & solicitor and lead advocate.

    Steve’s interests outside work centre around the great New Zealand outdoors – tramping, skiing, scuba, swimming & kayaking and fishing.

    Steve is married with two adult sons.

    He is also a past President of Albany Rotary in 2008/2009.

  • Associate, BA LLB Margaret Hickton-Burnett

    Marg’s law degree is from Waikato University and her arts degree (Anthropology) is from Auckland University. She worked as a lawyer for 5 years in London (from 1997 to 2002) where she qualified as a solicitor of England and Wales.

    Marg joined Barter & Co in July 2003.Marg has a wide range of experience including civil litigation, relationship property, commercial contracts, trusts & estate planning, and employment law.

    Marg is involved in all aspects of litigation, apart from appearing in Court, including drafting pleadings, discovery, preparing briefs and submissions.

    She has represented parties in a wide range of civil proceedings including those relating to relationship property, employment, trusts and other commercial disputes.

    Phillips

    Rick’s degree is from Auckland University. He founded his own legal practice in Parnell, Auckland where he practised in family and business law for 20 years.

    Rick’s commercial clients included businesses importing & exporting, manufacturing, wholesaling, retailing, software development, property development, and money lending.

    Rick masterminded the challenge by which competitive duty free shopping was introduced at Auckland International Airport, has undertaken professional consultancy work in Foreign jurisdictions and held professional directorships.

    Rick’s primary role in our litigation team is his experienced forensic and investigative skills.

    Rick joined Barter & Co in September 2011.

    Blackmore

    Kate’s degrees in law and commerce (majoring in international trade) are from the University of Auckland. Prior to joining Barter & Co in March 2009 Kate worked in family businesses (earthmoving and quarrying) and for the Electorate office of Hon Murray McCully (Member of Parliament).

    Kate has commercial litigation and dispute resolution experience.

    Kate is involved in all aspects of litigation, including appearing in Court, drafting pleadings, discovery, preparing briefs and submissions. She has represented parties in a range of civil proceedings including those relating to relationship property, testamentary promises, employment, and other commercial disputes.

  • Solicitor, LLB Laurence
    Herbke

    Laurence comes to Barter and Co after spending 18 months at the Public Defence Service defending clients facing criminal charges. Prior to this he lectured in English Common Law principles at a German University in between supporting Borussia Dortmund and playing for a local football team in the weekends.

    Laurence is dedicated to defending the rights of people charged by the state. He has extensive experience guiding people through the criminal justice system and achieving the best possible outcome for them. He fits into the Firm’s litigation team providing a Criminal Law service which includes representing clients appearing in the District Court on most charges, on appeals to the High Court, and on Limited Licence applications.

    Laurence is also experienced in family law litigation, employment disputes and property transactions. At Barter and Co, he has been assisting with civil litigation files and will bring the same passion to those matters as he does to other areas of law.
